The Fraternal Order of Police is collaborating with Freddie Mac to provide the CreditSmart® financial education program to FOP members.

CreditSmart® helps individuals understand credit and money management, set clear financial goals, create a budget, save for the future, and borrow less expensively.

CreditSmart® is designed to enhance successful, life-long money management skills.

Subjects to be covered include:

• Your credit and why it is important
• Managing your money
• Goal Setting
• Banking services, an important step
• Establishing and maintaining good credit
• Understanding credit scoring
• Thinking like a lender
• Avoiding credit traps
• Restoring your credit
• Planning for the future
• Becoming a homeowner

The FOP CreditSmart® financial education program will be piloted in eight cities during 2006 including: Washington, D.C., Columbus, Ohio, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago and Albuquerque. In each pilot city, 15 to 18 FOP members will be trained by Freddie Mac trainers in a two-day session to deliver this financial education program. Once trained, they will be able to instruct other FOP members to be CreditSmart®. Planning between the FOP and Freddie Macfor is underway for the next phase of training.
