Legislation Supported by the National Fraternal Order of Police
- TOP PRIORITY H.R. 324 (Filner, D-CA), legislation which would grant statutory arrest authority to law enforcement officers employed by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD);
- TOP PRIORITY H.R. 327 (Filner, D-CA), the "Law Enforcement Officers Equity Act," would provide 6 (c) benefits to approximately 30,000 Federal law enforcement officers who currently do not have them;
- H.R. 365 (Grimm, R-NY), the "National Blue Alert Act," would create a national alert system for law enforcement officers who are missing, killed or seriously injured in the line of duty;
- H.R. 420 (Renherg, R-MT), the "Veterans' Heritage Firearms Act," would allow individuals, veterans, law enforcement officers and law enforcement agencies to register firearms they possess which were prohibited by the enactment of the Gun Control Act of 1968;
- H.R. 495 (King, R-NY), the "See Something, Say Something Act," would expand the current immunity from liability to cover all persons who report suspicious activity to authorities, not just suspicious activity which occurs on Federal property or transportation systems;
- H.R. 815 (Gerlach, R-NY), the "Justice for Public Servants Act," would expand the death penalty by adding the murder or attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, Member of Congress or Congressional employee as aggravating factors in death penalty cases;
- H.R. 963 (Smith, R-TX), the "See Something, Say Something Act," would expand the current immunity from liability to cover all persons who report suspicious activity to authorities, not just suspicious activity which occurs on Federal property or transportation systems;
- TOP PRIORITY H.R. 1332 (McKeon, R-CA), the "Social Security Fairness Act," would repeal both the "Windfall Elimination Provision" and the "Government Pension Offset" in current Social Security law;
- H.R. 1416 (Paulsen, R-MN), the "Crime Victim Restitution and Court Fee Intercept Act," would provide federal authorization for the U.S. Department of Treasury to intercept tax refunds to pay overdue court-ordered financial obligations, including court fines, fees and restitution;
- H.R. 1558 (Miller, R-FL), the "Hunting, Fishing, and Recreational Shooting Protection Act," which would prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from banning traditional ammunition because of its lead content;
- TOP PRIORITY H.R. 1789 (Paulsen, R-MN), the "State and Local Law Enforcement Discipline, Accountability and Due Process Act," would protect the due process rights of officers during internal investigations;
- H.R. 1800 (Sensenbrenner, R-WI), the "FISA Sunsets Reauthorization Act," which would reauthorize two expiring provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act and make a third one permanent;
- H.R. 1896 (Weiner, D-NY), the "COPS Improvement Act," would establish the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) as a distinct entity within the U.S. Department of Justice and reauthorize the law enforcement officer hiring program, as well as reauthorizes funds for technology grants and community prosecutors;
- H.R. 1981 (Smith, R-TX), the "Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act," which would improve the ability of law enforcement to combat trafficking in child pornography;
- H.R. 2492 (Marino, R-PA), the "Animal Fight Spectator Prohibition Act,"which would make it a crime to attend or bring a minor to any event or venture at which animals are forced to fight;
- H.R. 2797 (Brady, R-TX), the "Public Servant Retirement Protection Act," would repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and replace it with a more equitable, individualized calculation of Social Security benefits;
- H.R. 3261 (Smith, R-TX), the "Stop Online Piracy Act," which would strengthen the ability of the United States to take action against foreign "rogue" websites that traffic in counterfeit and pirated products;
- H.R. 3561 (Kind, D-WI), the "Small Business Pension Promotion Act," which would ensure that existing public retirement plans which use "years of service" to establish a normal retirement date will be able to continue this practice without penalty and without jeopardizing the retirement plans and benefits;
- H.J.Res. 13 (Emerson, R-MO), would amend the Constitution to give Congress the power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States;
- S. 113 (Hutchison, R-TX), the "Public Servant Retirement Protection Act," would repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and replace it with a more equitable, individualized calculation of Social Security benefits;
- S. 193 (Leahy, D-VT), the "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT) Act Sunset Extension Act," which would reauthorize three expiring provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act;
- S. 207 (Kohl, D-WI), the "COPS Improvement Act," would establish the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) as a distinct entity within the U.S. Department of Justice and reauthorize the law enforcement officer hiring program, as well as reauthorizes funds for technology grants and community prosecutors;
- S. 250 (Leahy, D-VT), the "Justice for all Reauthorization Act," which would strengthen rights for crime victims and reauthorize several successful grant programs, including the Debbie Smith DNA Backlog Grant Program and the Kirk Bloodsworth Post-Conviction DNA Testing Grant Program, and take key steps to reduce the continuing backlog of untested rape kits, including providing funding, best practices, and support for law enforcement to ensure that rape kits make their way from police departments to laboratories;
- S. 306 (Webb, D-VA), the "National Criminal Justice Commission Act," would create a National Criminal Justice Commission to study the nation's criminal justices systems;
- S. 505 (Collins, R-ME), the "See Something, Say Something Act," would expand the current immunity from liability to cover all persons who report suspicious activity to authorities, not just suspicious activity which occurs on Federal property or transportation systems;
- S. 513 (Feinstein, D-CA), the "Saving Kids from Dangerous Drugs Act," would increase penalties on those who tailor-market illegal drugs to entice children to purchase them;
- S. 657 (Cardin, D-MD), the "National Blue Alert Act," would create a national alert system for law enforcement officers who are missing, killed or seriously injured in the line of duty;
- S. 755 (Wyden, D-OR), the "Crime Victim Restitution and Court Fee Intercept Act," would provide federal authorization for the U.S. Department of Treasury to intercept tax refunds to pay overdue court-ordered financial obligations, including court fines, fees and restitution;
- S. 798 (Tester, D-MT), the "Veterans' Heritage Firearms Act," would allow individuals, veterans, law enforcement officers and law enforcement agencies to register firearms they possess which were prohibited by the enactment of the Gun Control Act of 1968;
- S. 838 (Tester, D-MT), the "Hunting, Fishing, and Recreational Shooting Protection Act," which would prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from banning traditional ammunition because of its lead content;
- S. 890 (Leahy, D-VT), the "Fighting Fraud to Protect Taxpayers Act," would redirect money in the Working Capital fund toward additional fraud enforce efforts and give the US Secret Service the permanent authority to conduct undercover operations;
- S. 955 (Kerry, D-MA), the "Protect Those Who Serve Act," which would authorize up to $500 million in grants to States to provide up to eighty percent (80%) of the costs of the renovation, modernization, and construction of law enforcement facilities;
- S. 968 (Leahy, D-VT), the "Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (PROTECT IP) Act," which would strengthen the ability of the United States to take action against foreign "rogue" websites that traffic in counterfeit and pirated products;
- TOP PRIORITY S. 985 (Mikulski, D-MD), the "Law Enforcement Officers' Retirement Equity Act," would provide 6 (c) benefits to approximately 30,000 Federal law enforcement officers who currently do not have them;
- S. 990 (Landrieu, D-LA), the "PATRIOT Sunsets Extension Act," which would reauthorize three expiring provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act;
- S. 1103 (Leahy, D-VT), legislation that would extend the term of Robert S. Mueller III as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation;
- S. 1483 (Levin, D-WI), the "Incorporation Transparency and Law Enforcement Assistance Act," would help law enforcement combat the misuse of U.S. corporations by requiring States to obtain beneficial ownership information for corporations and limited liability companies formed under State law;
